Anthony stood at the front of the classroom and decided to pass out the lesson materials at each desk before the students were to arrive.

Apparently shield had realized the need for some more refined training, and had chosen Commander Masters to give it. This class would be on how to think in combat, and would be called ”The Combatant's Brain”

The students began filing in and it almost reminded Anthony of College. Only these students mostly had military bearing, and therefore, didn't have all the noise and milling about of college students.

"Welcome civilians, enlisted personnel, non-commissioned officers, commissioned officers, and general officers. To facilitate learning, group discussion and efficiency, there will only be two designations here. Teacher and student. Within the confines of this class, all students will be equal and subordinate tot he teacher, which is me. If you cannot handle that, there's the door. Feel free to leave and fail your next SHIELD evaluation."

After a Lieutenant General, Colonel, and a Master Sergeant left the room,he spoke again.

"Now that the non-dedicated have gone, we can get down to business. Everyone in here will be addressed as Mister or Miss and then their Surname. As a matter of fact take all rank insignia off of your uniforms now."

After everyone, including the Commander had done so, he continued his speaking.

"Take a look on your desk, there should be a stack of materials, a black ink pen, a blue ink pen, a stack of line paper for notes about 10 pages thick, a stand of ten plain white sheets of paper for any diagrams or charts you'd like to right out by hand, a stack of all of the pre-made diagrams, and finally, a transcript of my lecture today will be available at the end, up here on my desk."

"Today we will begin by discussing the “OODA Loop.” What is the OODA loop? Simply it is a way of describing the process in which individuals or organizations react to what's occurring around them. In this class, we will be focusing on it's implications and implementation to the individual.

"The OODA Loop consist of four steps, or four stages. The first step is called Observation, the act of observing. It takes a perfectly healthy human brain with no deficiencies zero point zero zero five, or five one thousandths of a second to receive sound input through the Cochlear Nerve in your ears; 0.004, or 4/1,000th of a second to receive taste input through the Facial Nerve ; 0.007, or 7/1,000th of a second to receive taste input through the Olfactory Nerve in your tongue; and 0.005, or 5/1,000ths of a second to receive taste input through the Optic Nerve from your eye. The sense of touch is different. The sense of touch is highly dependent on the distance between the area touched and the brain. To explain I will use the average height of a man. Five foot, ten, or seventy inches, or one point seven seven eight meters."

"In normal human beings with no deficiencies, neural signals are sent to and from the brain at a speed of 300 m/s. That translates to 984 feet per second. When you factor that in with the after male height and body proportions, it will take 0.014, or 14/1,000ths of second to get sensation from the bottom of our feet to your brain; 0.008, or 8/1,000ths of a second to receive input from, and send output to your hands; 0.013, or 13/1,000ths of a second from to and from your knees; and 0.004, or 4/1,000ths of second to and from your elbows."

"The next step in your mental process is called “Orient.” What one does in the orient step is that they filter through all of the raw data inputs from their five senses, or as some believe, their sixth sense as well, through logical thought process, such as if-then statements, any emotional thought processes, such as are they angry already, cultural preconceived notions, such as “pink is a girl's color:, and previous experience, such as “The last time I received this input, that result happened.”"

"Now... I'm not going to get into the social aspects of the orient step because it is very different for every person. I will however let you know that the neurological part of the orient step's in a perfectly healthy human brain with no deficiencies, is gonna take a MINIMUM of 0.11, or 1/10th of a second."

"The third step in the process is called “Decide.” The Decide step is your brain calculating the believed correct response to your understanding of the inputs collected in the observe step, and processed in the orient step. Just like the Orient step, the neurological process in a perfectly healthy human brain with no deficiencies, is going to take a minimum of 0.11, or 1/10th of a second to perform."

"The final step in the OODA Loop is called ”Act.” The Act step is your brain transmitting those responses that were calculated in the decide step, to the parts of your body required to carry out the calculated response. The time for the muscles in question to receive the instructions is the same as to receive these inputs from the body parts in the observe step."

"What does this mean in the real world for me, you might be asking. The real world application of this is that it means that the maximum speed of a perfectly healthy human brain and nervous system, is 0.2 or 1/5th of a second per action, and 0.4 or 2/5th of a second per reaction. This means that if you are the aggressor in combat you will be able to make a maximum of five actions per second, and the defender will only be able to make 2.5 actions per second. Now this may not be true when dealing with super humans or mutants due to natural or unnatural enhancements."

"The moral of this story is to ALWAYS be the aggressor whenever possible. And if you are the defender, you will have to be twice as combat effective with each action since you will get at most half as many."

"Now that we have examined the way the mind works, in a combat mode, and why... We shall look at some examples."

"I'm sure some of you have used flash-bangs in tactical operations before. Those are effective for the following reasons. First is that against the untrained, they reset the targets' OODA Loop by wiping their possible data from the Orient Step. When it overloads their nervous system, it temporarily blinds them, removes their hearing, and robs them of their balance. This means they'd have to start over thinking about what happened, what that means, and how to respond to it, using only their senses of taste, smell, and touch. Sine the human brain is about 80% oriented to the visual and 15% the auditory, that robs them of 95% of the normal data to react to their world around them."

"Another example is in a gun fight. Let's take the example of the Old West-Style gun duel. In fiction depictions and in most real life examples, the two men stand the prerequisite distance apart and at the designated signal would draw their guns and fire. Both men perform their OOD of their OODA Loops, and at the designated signal, they perform their A, their Act steps, and the better shot at that moment wins"

"However, the way to double your likelihood of not getting hot, and thereby getting more time to aim your shot and hit the target, is to do something simple like crouching, or even just stepping to the left or right as you draw your weapon, and then shoot. Now if you want until the opponent draws so make this decision, you will be reacting and therefore half as fast as them. However, if you make this plan from the beginning, and train to do it right, you can take your step while he is drawing, while you are drawing. This will cause him to either shoot and miss you, then re-aim to shoot you, or to take longer to aim to shoot you. This will give you a minimum of 1/10th, and a maximum of 1/4th of a second of more time than the opponent to shoot, and shoot accurately."
