The Water
Sustains me without even trying.
The water can't drown me
Aia stared up at the ceiling of her cell. She was tired. She didn't sleep very well these days. She always felt too dry. They rationed her water, only giving her so much. Can't give her too much of what makes her strong apparently... With a sigh, Aia rolled over to look at the half a glass of water she had beside her bed, well, cot really. She got two classes like this a day. One in the morning and one in the evening. On the days she was allowed in the courtyard, Aia got a little more. They hadn't bothered to fix the gaping hole that had since filled with water.

Of course, they had her trained with tranquilliser guns and real guns alike. What's worse, she didn't get to go out there everyday. It had been a day since she'd last gone out, since she'd last submerged. Her skin was already beginning to crack. Just the outer layers for now, but any longer or too much movement would split her skin all the way to the muscle. She felt like eggshell China, not even able to touch her own skin for fear of starting the cracking process.

With a sigh, Aia sat up, feeling a small crack forming on her waist and her forearm. Small ones still, nothing too bad. She whirled the water out of its cup, floating it through the air. The dim light glinted off the water, making it shine. It was lovely, as always. She just wished she could have more.

There was a loud bang outside and Aia glanced up briefly. There were a pair of guards opening her cell, looking at her with open disgust and fear. "Let's go Fish Bait," the first of the guards said, glaring at Aia with unmasked hatred. "Now."

Aia blinked. "Where are we going?" she asked, not moving from her position, the water in the air pulling towards her. "Doesn't matter. We're going. Now." Aia shook her head. "No, not until you tell me where we're going."

She didn't trust the guards. She didn't really trust anyone. Only Leavitt. But she didn't get to see him that often. The second guard moved then, grabbing Aia's jaw and hoisted her small frame easily. She was pushed against the wall, and she felt her skin split more drastically. "You'll do as we say," he snarled, his breath in her face, making Aia uncomfortable.

Instincts over road her then. Aia whipped the water at the man, slicing a cut on his cheek from the water whip. The other guard came in then, taser in hand. But the guard holding her to the wall dismissed him. "She is such a pretty thing," he cooed, stroking Aia's face roughly, opening more cracks along her delicate skin. "Be a shame to have to use that when she could do so much for us."

Aia squirmed, trying to get free, trying to lash out with her water whip. But the first guard had trapped it in a cup. She was defenceless. "Let me go," she begged, but the guards simply laughed, ignore her fear.

Leavitt didn't leave his cell too often, but since his behavior had improved from the beginning of his time there, they began to take him on walks as it were. He was allowed to go out to the courtyard every few days and was beginning to get to know more of the prisoners there. It was amazing to see the types of people they were throwing in there. They were literally taking people's lives and throwing them in a gutter just because of a stupid opinion... Leavitt wasn't thrilled with the things that they were doing or the way they were treating people and he commonly made it known to the guards that worked at the prison. Only a few of them listened, the others seemed to take delight in torturing the inmates for fun.

While he was being escorted back into the building from being outside (he was still in solitary and so still required a private escort) he got to see a little more of the camp. The courtyard was on the opposite side of the structure and so he needed to go past the administrative block, past the cafeteria, and past some of the other housing blocks in order to get back. It was during this journey that he heard a very familiar voice shouting (more squeaking) at what seemed to be some sort of abuse.

Leavitt had never been good at containing his anger, but it had been harder and harder for him to do since moving to Genosha. Most things that happened there were unfair and made him so angry that he couldn't control his mutation. So when he heard Aia's voice, something immediately clicked in his head and his fine-tuned ears perked up.

That was definitely her voice he heard. He started toward the sound, But he was stopped by his guards. ”Woah there, Fido, calm down, ya mutt. Leavitt wasn’t listening to them though. He could hear Aia’s words now, and those of the guards torturing her. Without warning, he ripped away from his escorts and headed down the hall toward the commotion.

He rushed into the little room and, upon seeing the men threatening Aia, he jumped on one of them and spun him around, tossing him against the opposite wall of the dirt room. “Leave her alone!” he growled before feeling the terrible sting of the taster on the back of his neck. He growled again and hit the floor.

Leavitt could feel his heart beating and it drowned out the rest of the room. He knew he was going to lose control, and struggled to contain himself, but he could still hear the guards taunting Aia. A low growl rolled out from deep inside him. “Leave her,” he said in a raspy voice.

The Water

The water can't drown me
She could hardly tell what happened. All Aia knew was that one moment there were two guards staring at her with infinite hostility. And the next, one of the guards was gone, thrown against the dirt wall. She stared as Leavitt protected her, relief flooded her. The glass containing her water fell to the ground, shattering on impact.

As one of the guards brought the taser to the back of Leavitt's neck, Aia felt anger bubbling within. Nobody hurt her friends. With a flick of her wrist, she pulled the water out of the dirt floor and into a ball. She used the water to snatch the tasers from the guards, shorting them out in the liquid. "Don't touch him," she said, her natural luminescence brightening, casting the room in an eerie blue light.

Drawing some of what precious little moisture Aia had left in her body, she pinned both of the guards against the wall by the throat. A large crack formed on her cheek, spreading down to her collarbone. "Leave us alone," Aia said, her voice shaking as the water that she guided pushed the guards out of the cell, and closed the door.

It wasn't the best way of protecting them, locking them in a cage. But it was better than nothing. They couldn't make a run for it, that would have brought the entire island coming down on them. Aia jammed the lock with the water, freezing it solid inside. She kneeled by Leavitt, touching his hair gently. "Are you okay?" Aia said gently, smiling sadly. "Thank you."
